If you’re concerned about the increasing cost of your water bill there’s something that you can do about it. With many homes across the country now on water meters the cost of household water charges is increasing all the time. Fortunately it is easy to reduce you water bill and help protect the environment as well.

Rainwater collection is a simple and cost effective way to reduce the amount of water that you’ll require from the mains supply. Rainwater which would normally just run down the drain is instead collected and put to good use around the home. A rainwater system can be put in to the majority of homes and there are a choice of available options. Examples include:

Water Butt

This is the cheapest and most straightforward means of harvesting rainwater. Essentially a large barrel that is used to collect water from your drainpipes. The water that is gathered can be used to water the garden along with other domestic tasks like cleaning the car.

Rainwater Harvesting System

This is a more complex collection system that is ideal for locations with low levels of rain fall. Water is gathered by downpipes from the roofing and piped to a storage tank which can be either over or underground. The water is then filtered to remove any pieces of debris within it and a settlement water tank is used so smaller items of debris fall to the floor. The clean water which is gathered can then be pumped to your loft header tank. You can use it for flushing lavatories, washing and running appliances like washing machines however it won’t be fit to drink.

Drinking Water

Collected rainwater can also be used as drinking water. Before it can be used as drinking water the collected water must be completely filtered and sterilised. To make rainwater drinkable a sterilisation device must be fitted as well as 25 and 5 micron filtration systems.

There are many advantages to collecting rainwater for use in the home and back garden. One of the biggest is obviously the fact that it can reduce your household water bill considerably. Even a basic water butt will save you a lot of money over its life time. As well as financial benefits there are of course a number of environmental benefits.
